Dear Academics,
The Turkey Fulbright Education Commission has opened applications for the Academic Research Fellowship for scholars wishing to conduct research at universities and research centers in the United States during the 2027–2028 academic year.
Who is eligible to apply?
- Researchers who are citizens of the Republic of Turkey
- Those who have held a doctoral degree for at least 5 years as of the application deadline
- Applications are accepted from all fields. Those planning to conduct research in clinical subfields of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Psychology that require direct patient contact are not eligible to apply. Medical doctors may apply starting in the fifth year after completing their residency and thereafter.
- There is no upper age limit
- There is no requirement to be affiliated with an institution (applications as an Independent Scholar are accepted)
What does the scholarship cover?
- Living expenses in the U.S.
- Professional development support
- Health insurance
- Travel support for the fellow and one dependent (spouse and children may accompany the fellow on a J-2 visa)
Program details
- Duration: Minimum 3 months, maximum 9 months
- Research start date: No earlier than August 1, 2027, and no later than February 1, 2028
- English proficiency requirement: TOEFL iBT ≥ 75 or IELTS Academic ≥ 6. No English proficiency test score is required for those who completed their Ph.D. in the U.S., Australia, the U.K., Ireland, Canada, or New Zealand, or for faculty members at a university or department where the language of instruction is English.
- Application platform: Online via Slate (Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program)
Obligation: While there is no mandatory service requirement, participants are obligated to return to Turkey after the program and remain there for two years, as required by J-1 visa regulations.
